Computer Science Department Computer Systems Labs

Welcome to the Cal Poly, SLO Computer Science Department's Computer Systems Labs! The facilities for those enrolled in CSC, SE, or CPE courses. By using any equipment located in the lab you agree to be familiar with and abide by the lab's policies. Those who do not abide by them will face the consequences - ranging from a frowning labmon to loss of lab privileges.

Who are those people at the front of the lab? They're a group of experts known as Lab Monitors. They're here to answer any questions you might have and assist you with any problems. If the labmon on duty can't help you with your problem, he will probably refer you to another labmon who knows more about it.

If you have a suggestion or comment we'd like to hear from you. If you've ever wondered why we did something in particular, wanted to request we get a specific piece of software, or comment on a particular labmon, email sysadmins.

We operate 12 labs used for various purposes, classes, and projects. Lab machines are single boot Linux (Fedora 9), although Windows applications are accessible through from Linux via remote desktop and terminal services. Here is a list of software installed on lab machines for AY 2009 - Sep 08 through Jun 09.

Here is a list of significant events and outages for Summer 2009.

We are planning on reloading the following faculty and staff workstations Summer 2009.

Faculty and staff may use CSC Department email. If you are a current user of CSC Email, then you should read our page on the ITS Zimbra transition. CSC Email is being transitioned to the standard Cal Poly ITS Zimbra email Summer 09. (This does *NOT* apply to students, students use ITS Zimbra email already).

Unix Login Servers

These are Unix machines available for general use, on or off campus.

Servers and Equipment Available for Faculty and Student Use

Usually, we issue virtual machines to students for projects. Follow the directions here to request a virtual machine for student or project use. We have actual servers and other equipment available for faculty that needs it for hands-on labs or for student projects.

Lost and Found

Lost something in the labs? Check out the Lost and Found page for items found by our Lab Monitors. Items can be claimed at the Lab Monitor's Desk in the CSL 14-235.

Found something in the labs? Please bring in and report all items found to the Lab Monitor at the Lab Monitor's Desk. Help us find the owner by giving us the date found and where the item was found.

Be a Lab Monitor!

We're always looking for a few good monitors. A good reason to be a lab monitor is flexibility - you can set a schedule that works for you, or work on projects that suit you. Need some time to work on homework? Sign up to monitor a lab, and you'll have some free time to do so. Want to work on system administration projects? If so, we have plenty to do. There's always servers to set up, wires to pull, operating systems to load. We'll work with you to set the hours that work for you, and to give you enough to be interested and busy.

Typically we hire new lab monitors at the very beginning of each quarter. Come by the first week of the quarter and fill out the simple application form. A fresh resume always helps, as well. For more information sysadmins.

If our workstations or servers don't have anything better to do, then they crunch numbers for the Computer Systems Lab teams for Einstein@home or Seti@home. Join us and help! We prefer to donate cycles to Einstein@home, as they are less well known. We have lots of SPARC servers, and Einstein@home doesn't do SPARC, so these servers work on Seti@home.
