Overview

Mobile Service Learning: Bringing Positive Computer Science Experiences to High School Campuses

Presently, Computer Science suffers from the declining enrollment and retention of women and minorities. Both Project-Based Learning (PBL) and K-12 outreach activities (such as workshops, seminars, and camps) show promise in reversing this trend. We are proposing to introduce PBL and K-12 outreach into our curriculum through changes to two existing courses, the involvement of prominent student clubs, such as ACM, IEEE, and SWE, and independent study. Upper-division students, via independent study and student club volunteers, will work closely with faculty advisers to create a set of outreach activities that will be assessed as a lab activity in an upper-division course, CSC 484. Students in our professional responsibilities course, CSC 300, will visit local high schools and conduct those activities. To our knowledge, this is a unique way to introduce service learning into a computer science curriculum, and would significantly expand existing efforts at Cal Poly.
